Study Guide

An Amazing Journey Through Time, Space & Scientific Discovery

Have you ever wondered why science works, how we know what is true, or what makes gravity, lasers, and motion possible? Defying Gravity takes students on an unforgettable journey through time and space to explore these questions—and discover how scientists investigate the world around us.

Internationally acclaimed performer Mark Nizer combines his passion for science education with extraordinary juggling, multimedia effects, lasers, humor, and audience participation. During this unique adventure, Mark is joined by his future self from 50 years ahead. Together, they must help students develop the scientific knowledge and critical-thinking skills needed to solve problems—and perhaps even save the future!

Students will learn how to ask meaningful questions, examine evidence, test ideas, and separate scientific facts from unreliable claims. Exciting demonstrations make complex concepts such as gravity, DNA, the speed of light, and the laws of motion accessible, memorable, and fun.

Educational, interactive, and visually spectacular, this show  inspires curiosity and shows students that science is more than a collection of facts—it is a powerful way of thinking, exploring possibilities, and understanding what is real.

Science Topics Explored:

  • The Scientific Method
  • Critical Thinking and Evaluating Evidence
  • The Speed of Light
  • Gravity
  • DNA
  • The Origins of Life
  • The Laws of Motion

Curriculum Connections: Physical Science, Life Science, Scientific Inquiry, STEM, Technology, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, and Media Literacy.

All performances take place in
The Center for the Arts at The College of Staten Island
