Where Books, Music & Literacy Take Center Stage!
Get ready to read, rock, sing, clap, and laugh as books and literacy come to life through the excitement of live rock ’n’ roll music! Reading ROCKS! is a high-energy, interactive performance that shows students that reading is everywhere—and reading really does ROCK!
Through familiar music, humor, audience participation, and creative storytelling, students explore favorite children’s literature inspired by authors and stories such as Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Harry Potter. Songs, games, and a hilarious literary quiz encourage students to recall characters, predict words and phrases, make connections, and celebrate the joy of books.
But reading isn’t limited to storybooks! Reading ROCKS! expands literacy beyond fiction by introducing students to the many types of informational and everyday texts they encounter in the real world. Students discover how we read maps, recipes, ingredient labels, traffic signs, international symbols, directions, and other visual texts to find information and make decisions.
From completing silly story phrases to following a recipe, interpreting symbols, recognizing signs, and singing along with the band, students actively participate while strengthening reading comprehension, listening, vocabulary, critical thinking, and information-literacy skills.
Perfect for celebrating literacy throughout the school year, Reading ROCKS! is especially exciting as a PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) kick-off or finale, Read Across America celebration, literacy event, or Summer Reading Program.
Combining live music, literature, informational text, movement, humor, and audience participation, this unforgettable program delivers one very important message:
Books can take you anywhere—and READING ROCKS!
